The country estate La Crucita spreads over a surface area of 7,500 square metres and is situated in the village of Haria, in the north of Lanzarote. A 2002 census showed a total of 1,189 inhabitants in the village. La Crucita is surrounded by over 50 palm trees, the majority of which are over one hundred years old, and it is set in a valley in which thousands of these species thrive. The estate boasts eight houses, each one different from the other, and they are fully equipped, whereby one of them is the main house and has a surface area of over 500 square metres. Each one bears the name of a village in the municipality; Haria, the main one, Yé, Máguez, Orzola, Tabayesco, Arrieta, Mala y Guinate. The estate and the houses have been designed for the disabled, free of obstacles and architectural barriers. Apart from the houses and open spaces at La Crucita, there is a garden area containing some twenty palm trees and an area of bbq area.
Building Style The building style of the houses on La Crucita finds its inspiration in the traditional architecture of Lanzarote. The chimneys- up to 8 different ones-, the earthenware and wooden floors blend together with generous use of carpentry in the ceilings, doors, windows and floors.
Keeping with tradition
In keeping with tradition, special emphasis has been placed upon the gardens, with some plants exclusively from the island and from the Canaries, whilst others are from other places. All the houses are furnished in a rustic style, have wooden wardrobes rather than built-in cupboards and are equipped with a ceramic hob, oven, satellite television and automatic washing machine.
Places of Interest
Four of the seven Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism are based in the municipality of Haria, such as The Cueva de los Verdes, the Mirador del Rio, Jameos del Agua and the Cactus Garden. The last three of these are the creations of Cesar Manrique, who spent the last years of his life in Haria.
Mirador del Río
This is a unique construction excavated from within the hillside and is situated in the massif of Famara, the Peñas del Chache, which rises to nearly 700 metres above sea level. The Mirador offers a panoramic view of the islands which make up the Chinijo Archipelago, La Graciosa being the principal island, with Alegranza and Montana Clara in the background.
Cueva de Los Verdes
A volcanic cavern of several kilometres in length, illuminated to highlight the various forms and colours of the molten lava during its passage to the sea. The former residents took refuge in the cavern during pirate raids on the island.
Jameos del Agua
An underground lagoon, which is home to blind albino crabs, with hanging tropical gardens and a stunning lagoon swimming pool, the Jameos del Agua also houses an underground auditorium and a museum with a permanent exhibition about volcanoes.
Jardin de Cactus
A garden without comparison in the world, there are 10,000 cacti of more than 1,400 species contained within its walls. Similar in design to a Roman amphitheatre, the garden is formed of several levels of volcanic stone beds.
In the municipality of Haria, there are also the Salt flats of Gusa, at the foot of the Famara massif and the Wind Park at Los Valles, which generates some of the island’s electricity.
Playa del Risco
The beach at El Risco is reached by descending from the summit of the massif of Famara, from an altitude of almost 700 metres, down to sea level by means of a two-kilometre footpath. It takes almost half an hour to descend. The beach has one of the most beautiful backdrops with the cliffs of the massif behind it. To ascend by the same pathway takes about an hour. With golden sands and a calm sea, it is isolated and lies within a nature reserve, looking out onto to the narrow stretch of sea, El Rió, which separates Lanzarote from La Graciosa.
Playa La Garita
This beach is situated in the village of Arrieta. It has golden sands and is sheltered from the prevailing wind and waves. It has numerous facilities: changing rooms and toilets, a breakwater, restaurants right next to the beach and a Red Cross station...
Caletón Blanco
Is situated very near to the village of Orzola. It’s an attractive beach thanks to the vivid colour contrast: the whiteness of its sand, the intense turquoise of the sea and the black volcanic lava. Caleton Blanco is only 15 minutes drive away from the estate of La Crucita.
Natural Spaces :
The Malpais of La Corona volcano – the lava fields surrounding the highest volcano on the island.
The Protected Zone of Teneguime.
Site of Scientific Interest at Jameos del Agua.
Haria is a natural reserve of biodiversity on the island. Protected by the Law for Natural Spaces, the hillsides of the Famara massif have been found to contain the highest number of indigenous botanical species per square metre in the whole of Europe.
